Neck Lift
What is a neck lift?
The term “neck lift” most often refers to procedures that address fullness or aging in the neck. It is most often a generic term used by the public to refer to various procedures such as the ones listed below.
The aging or full neck can be addressed in multiple ways. A neck lift could include sculpting or liposuction of fat in the neck as well as surgical tightening of the platysma bands. Dr. Kienstra often performs these procedures in combination (submentolplasty). He may also add additional heat to stimulate contracture in the underlying tissue. These procedures are most often done in combination with a facelift procedure - because aging rarely is isolated to the neck.
Submental Liposuction
Excess fat beneath the chin can be a problem for patients of all ages. Most often, submental liposuction is a good option for the “younger patient” whose skin has the elasticity necessary to conform to the new shape.
With targeted liposuction, this area is sculpted to produce a smoother, more defined neck. To remove the fat, a small incision is made beneath the chin. Using a device called a cannula, the fat is suctioned away. The entire procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Liposuction can be done in combination with other surgical procedures if needed.
Submentolplasty
Submentoplasty is a surgical procedure that works best on younger patients with a poor profile, hereditary fat deposits, recessive chin, and little excess skin. The surgery involves an incision under the chin, liposuction to the neck, removal of deep fat, and reshaping and tightening of the platysma muscle. This is not a proper procedure for older patients with significant excess skin.
Neck Lift / Facelift
A facelift by definition tightens the lower face and neck. The best way to understand a facelift is to first understand that no two facelifts are the same. Every patient is different - requiring difference approaches. At every level, the neck is addressed to some degree. See our facelift page for further information.
Neck FAQs
What causes sagging neck skin?
As we age, collagen and elastin fibers break down, resulting in loose skin and muscle bands that protrude along the length of the neck. Both genetics and age play a role in the development of sagging skin, as well as fat accumulation which can cause unwanted fullness in this area.
Can I just treat my neck?
The neck is always evaluated separately, but rarely treated individually. Quite often, Dr. Kienstra recommends a procedure called a Submentalplaty to significantly improve the sagging of the neck. Since the face and neck are companions in the aging process, the Submentalplasty is almost always performed in conjunction with a “mini,” standard, or deep plane facelift.
